What nobody told her, however: The small scar on her cheek, the result of a stupid accident, means something so much more in Behezda. Shara's task is simple: “Scout Behezda and report everything noteworthy.” There isn't much she does alone anymore, not since she met her new friends, but this task is an exception. “That's the mark of a criminal in Behezda.” “You're part of our group now.”Īnd then, she meets the people who will soon become her best friends. Badis doesn't seem to notice it, however. She takes a deep breath and makes her decision.īadis takes it and Shara feels like she just betrayed the only person who ever cared about her. At first, nothing comes to mind, but then, her gaze wanders to her wrist, where her mother's bracelet glitters in the setting sun's light. “I'm not talking about money,” he clarifies. “I – I don't have anything.”īadis dismisses her words with a wave of his hand. But you have to give me something I return.” It beats faster when Badis responds: “Sure. To her surprise, he shrugs, as if Shara hadn't just given him a part of her heart. “You want to work with me?” he clarifies after Shara makes her request. “Treasure just needs to be valuable to the person giving it up.”īefore meeting Badis, Shara had also thought that the value of a treasure was measured in coins and rare artifacts, but Badis showed her quickly how wrong she was. She doesn't know what she expected, but the answer still surprises her: The girl searches for her. Of everything that led her to this moment, meeting a girl that's so different from Badis, but also more familiar than Shara wants to admit. That was the beginning of their companionship. They always go like this.”Īnd Badis had laughed and said: “Word of advice: Never turn your back on lowlifes.” Shara had replied: “You must be new here. “Is that how your negotiations usually go?” Badis backed her into a wall and disarmed her attacker quickly, while Shara just stared at him with big eyes and a thrumming heart.Īfter the attacker fled, Badis asked her the same question the girl had asked just now.

When they first met, Shara was as naive as this girl is right now: She got into a fight and was stupid enough not to turn around, stupid enough to believe she already won.

The girl doesn't know that her question reminds Shara of Badis, the Thief King and the love of her life. “Is that how your negotiations usually go?” the girl asks. She is already thrilled to learn her story, although she would never admit that. Not that Shara minds her appearance in fact, she loves suspicious looking girls. It's something Shara had to learn as well, so she's glad she can share this advice with others, especially with such a suspicious looking girl. “Word of advice: Never turn your back on lowlifes.” (See the end of the chapter for more notes.) There will also be translation notes if I come across notable differences between the English and the German version of the book I already discovered some of them which I'm excited to share :DĬHAPTER SUMMARY: Ephyra meets Shara and teams up with her in order to find Eleazar's Chalice. Obviously, I'll also take quotes directly from the book – but I've also taken the liberty to modify some of them. The chapters are named after the original ones, but whenever I decided to switch the perspective to another character, I added their name in braces – just like in this very first chapter :) That's why I also included a short chapter summary for every ATSR chapter since I don't expect you to remember the events of every single one, but want you to know where the story is currently at :) Welcome to the second part of my “Age of Darkness Vignettes”!
